THE CUSTOMER AND THEIR REQUIREMENTS

Holcim Concrete Australia is one of the largest integrated suppliers and manufacturers of building materials and solutions in Australia & New Zealand.

The system was very problematic and becoming too expensive to maintain.

What solution was delivered to the client?

Replacement of an existing Swisslog multi-station Pneumatic Tube system (5 legs). The Swisslog system was un-reliable and not 100% fit for purpose. The system due to station configuration was unable to return carriers to the office when a driver forgot to send the docket back to the Batching Office. The system was very problematic and becoming too expensive to maintain.

What specific benefits did ALS solution bring to the client’s operation?

ALS listened to the client and applied best practices to develop a PT System that is not only easy to operate but has no moving parts or real smarts to the system.  We reutilised existing tube routes and added to them to install a Point to Point system from the Batching Plant to the Slump Stand.

Priorities of the install:

  • Ensure the controller and motors are easily accessible for Maintenance
  • Motor is away from the office for noise reasons
  • Motor and controller are safe from the weather
  • Air is filtered so concrete dust does not go through the motors or to the office space
  • Not obstruct the view of the plant from the Batching Office with a sleeve station in front of a window (safety)

We have redesigned the control/motor assemblies to fit within an IP66 electrical box.  This serves multiple purposes.  Secures the main componentry within a safe weatherproof lockable cabinet.  Allows the assembly to be built and tested in the Workshop prior to attending the site (saves approx. 5 hours of onsite install costs) not to mention looks smart.

How did the solution help their workflow? What challenges did it solve?

Made the process of Drivers receiving and sending the dockets to the batching plant simplified and more reliable.  If the system is offline it becomes a safety and productivity issue with drivers walking across the plant in front of other concrete trucks.

How long did tthe installation take to be completed?

2 Installers 4 full days.

Where did the project take place?

Holcim Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Holcim Victoria’s main 24 hours concrete Plant.

What were the challenges?

24-hour operation of the plant.

Why did the client choose us?

Because ALS consult with clients and ensure what we install is not only cost-effective but relevant to their intended use.  Our reputation for our after-install care and preparedness to do what is required to deliver the project in a professional manner.  On this install, the technicians volunteered to work a Sunday on a long weekend as this was when the plant had a quiet period (only 2 trucks operating) to ensure minimal disruption to Holcim’s business.  The boys are top-shelf.
